Seminar Info

Personality in Practice: Experiencing the Enneagram as a Chaplain Power Tool

On October 4, 2012, the North Carolina Chaplains Association is returning to the Caraway Conference Center to offer its annual Fall Education Day. This year’s gathering is designed to be interactive and dynamic. Wanda Burton-Crutchfield, the NCCA Institutional Consultant, will guide the group in a day’s work with the Enneagram, a personality test created and refined by Don Riso and Russ Hudson. The title for the day is Personality in Practice: Experiencing the Enneagram as a Chaplain Power Tool. Participants will be offered an overview of the Enneagram and the Nine Personality Types that make up this tool. Then the group will engage case studies that invite them to use the Enneagram as an effective tool in the practice of chaplaincy.

In her work as a Corporate Chaplain, Wanda’s primary work is with employees. She is a chaplain to hospice chaplains, helping them process life, work, and end-of-life care. She also works as a life coach of sorts with administrators in Healthcare centers, Hospice offices, Home care offices, Rehab departments, and Pharmacy services. Wanda’s work also invites her to engage the corporate structure and the individuals and groups that are its human engine. The Enneagram has been instrumental in this work. Understanding personality types equips Chaplain Burton-Crutchfield in her work with individuals, with families, and with the teams she encounters every day. We will be invited to do similar work as we experience a personality laboratory at the Fall Education Day.

Some homework on the part of participants will deepen the experience. Chaplains planning to attend are encouraged to find out their own Enneagram type. Wanda recommends the following website,www.enneagraminstitute.com, where both free and low-cost ($10) testing is offered.

Chaplains Launch New Standards of Practice

By Darcy Lewis

Standards cover 13 key areas, including care for staff, team and collaboration

If you’re fortunate enough to have effective chaplains on staff, it’s often too easy to take them—and their importance on the clinical team—for granted. With chaplains focusing primarily on supporting patients, family members and hospital staff, they typically have been unassuming about the unique skills they bring to the health care table.

Until now, that is. “We’re not just like Pastor Joe down the street—only trained to work with a congregation,” says the Rev. Sue Wintz, president of the Association of Professional Chaplains. “We want to be recognized as leading the clinical team in cultural competency and for our contributions to patient outcomes and quality issues.”

Last January, the APC debuted its first-ever standards of practice. The group already had a code of ethics and a rigorous board certification process but decided it was time to spread the word outside the profession. “We want to articulate to other disciplines the rigor of our training and the many interventions we provide,” says the Rev. Jon Overvold, chair of the APC’s Commission on Quality in Pastoral Services, which drafted the standards. “People think we just say a few prayers. But we also help the person find a sense of hope to pull them into the future while navigating the now. No other discipline is trained to do this like chaplains.”

The Rev. Delois Brown-Daniels, vice president of mission and spiritual care at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, says this concern is a hallmark of her six-chaplain department. “Medical and end-of-life decision-making is very different for people of different faiths,” she notes, relating how a Hindu family whose daughter died in an accident was deeply resistant to the mandatory autopsy. “My chaplain called the coroner and got him to agree an autopsy was not needed, which meant the world to that family.”

As much as chaplains do to help individuals and families, Brown-Daniels notes they also help the hospital itself. “CEOs often need a larger context when grappling with difficult decisions,” she says. “Sometimes they find it helpful to talk to a chaplain about whether business decisions undergird who we say we are. Providing that support is part of our role, too.”

Standard Practice

The Association of Professional Chaplains’ standards for hospital-based chaplains include:

Assessment: Gather and evaluate relevant information on the patient’s situation and biopsychosocial and spiritual/religious health

Delivery of care: Develop and implement a care plan to promote patient well-being and continuity of care

Documentation of care: Enter relevant medical, psychosocial and spiritual/religious information into the patient’s medical record

Teamwork and collaboration: Collaborate with the hospital’s interdisciplinary care team

Ethical practice: Adhere to the APC’s Common Code of Ethics

Confidentiality: Respect the confidentiality of all sources, including the patient, medical record and other team members

Respect for diversity: Work with the interdisciplinary care team to provide culturally competent, patient-centered care

Care for staff: Provide timely and sensitive chaplaincy care to the hospital staff through individual and group interactions

Care for the organization: Provide chaplaincy care to the organization consistent with the mission statement

Chaplain as leader: Provide leadership in the organization by participating on committees, councils and administrative teams

Continuous quality improvement: Seek and create opportunities to enhance the quality of chaplaincy care practice

Research: Practice evidence-based care, including ongoing evaluation of new practices and, when appropriate, contribute to or conduct research

Knowledge and continuing education: Develop and demonstrate a working, current knowledge of theory and practice and integrate that into care

Source: Standards of Practice for Professional Chaplains in Acute Care Settings, APC, 2010

This article 1st appeared in the October 2010 issue of HHN Magazine.
